It’s Getting Hot in Here
World experiences hottest week ever recorded and more is forecast to come.
July 2023 saw the hottest temperatures for 120,000 years.
Global temperatures are rising due to increasing levels of carbon dioxide and an unusual band of strong winds. This is the hottest week ever recorded since instrumental measures of air temperatures began in the 1850s.
An El Niño event is also playing a role in the rising temperatures which could cause the 1.5C global warming threshold to be breached soon, leading to irreversible changes to world weather patterns. Scientists have warned of this for 30+ years, and the UN secretary-general has warned that if key measures to limit fossil fuel emissions are not taken soon, the world will be in a "catastrophic situation".
Oh Baby Baby
Japan’s population fell by 800,000 last year
Japan's population is decreasing due to low fertility rates and a high number of deaths. All prefectures in the country saw a decrease in Japanese nationals for the first time.
Despite this, Tokyo's overall population rose due to foreign residents. In response, the Japanese government is trying to increase the number of foreign workers by creating new visa categories and allowing some to stay indefinitely.
There are similar reports and numbers coming out of China but it is challenging to get any accurate data from there.

Podcast I’m Walking to
American politics can be frustrating but it’s fun to watch. There are a bunch of new candidates coming out of the woodwork which makes watching even more fascinating. These are not seasoned politicians but, smart, experienced business people.
The four Besties do a great job of asking questions that are real and relevant. And, Vivek answers most of them honestly and without the usual politician “script”.
It may not happen yet but soon we may see someone like this taking the captain’s seat in the US. It’s an interesting podcast and worth a listen.

Book Quote I’ve Highlighted
Most of us have lives filled with mediocrity. We said yes to things that we felt half-hearted about. So we’re too busy to react when opportunities come our way. We miss out on the great because we’re busy with the mediocre. The solution is to say yes to less. If you’re not feeling “Hell yeah, that would be awesome!” about something, say no.
Quote I’m Pondering
“Thinking is hard, that’s why people judge.” - Carl Jung
